Family Law is the domestic relations area of the law dealing with peoples’ families and associated issues. It is a difficult area of law because peoples’ emotions are running high, which requires a special objective posture by the attorney. While people are not required to have an attorney represent them in Family Law, dealing with the procedural requirements while in an emotional state makes navigating the legal system very difficult—sometimes becoming an insurmountable hurdle.
People involved with the Family Law system often find themselves dealing with a very difficult stage of their lives, including possibly:
1. Feelings of anger, hurt, abandonment, or disappointment when separating from one’s partner.
2. Not being able to visit with the children because the other parent is unwilling to share the children.
3. Financial difficulties of having to support two households in a difficult economy.
These are all sensitive issues to each person involved in the Family Law system. People, for the most part, are reasonable. If people can find common ground based upon reasonableness, then an alternative to litigation is present. If people can agree, then the litigation process can be avoided partially or all together, avoiding the necessity to have the court make the decisions for the parties.
